So, with the help of my sponsor and my Higher Power, here’s the way I eat. It’s meant to be a conversation where we open up and find the way our own special fire wants to burn. My tools include eating according to my food plan, regular conversations with my sponsor, attending meetings, reaching out to fellows by phone, refraining from gossiping about or comparing myself to other fellows (anonymity), reading literature that supports my Recovery, writing about my thoughts and feelings, checking in on gratitude, doing service, and, most importantly for me, practicing Quiet Time or meditation for 20 – 40 minutes every day.Ī Cup of Kindness is not a substitute for the life-changing influence of a 12-step program. When I use the tools daily I notice that I feel happy, joyous and free! Even so, I don’t practice the tools perfectly. My 12-step program for food addiction suggests certain tools. The love of the fellowship and, through the fellowship, the new relationship I have with a Higher Power brought me to sanity when I desperately needed it.Īnything worth doing well requires daily practice. The 12 steps continue to give me good orderly direction. Not only did I lose the weight, but I’ve kept if off, one day at a time, ever since. This was a completely different experience than all the diets I had tried for so many years. In January 2007, at 6 feet tall, 230.4 pounds and age 51, I started participating in a very strong 12-step program for food addiction that changed me as a person, gave me a refreshing spiritual foundation, provided a structure that created all new habits, and stoked me into an engine for losing 75 pounds (95 pounds down from my top weight of 250). I hope you'll join me in this kitchen and let me know what's cooking with you.
